Integrity in leadership: TRUTHFULNESS
Updated: Mar 16
Truthfulness is where integrity stops being a concept and becomes a way of living.
It is easy to speak about honesty when it costs nothing, when the room agrees with us, when the outcome is safe. The real test comes in the quiet moments were saying less would protect us, where adjusting the story would make things smoother, where silence would be more convenient.
I have seen organisations invest enormous time and money in values, in leadership programs, in beautifully written statements about ethics and culture, yet the daily behaviour told a different story. Not because people did not know the right words, but because truthfulness requires courage and courage cannot be trained in a workshop if it is not lived at the top.
People always know.
They may not react immediately, they may not challenge it openly, but trust quietly disappears the moment words and reality no longer match.
Truthfulness is alignment between what we believe, what we say and what we do, especially when it would be easier not to.
Terrie lived this without ever needing to announce it. The same voice in every room, the same person in every conversation, the same standards for herself as for everyone around her. That is why people trusted her, not because she spoke about integrity, but because she never stepped away from it.
Truthfulness is not about being perfect. It is about being real, about choosing what is right over what is easy, about creating environments where people feel safe because they know what they see is what they get.
Integrity in leadership begins here.
With truth that does not change depending on the audience.
Follow the journey as we continue to bring these reflections to life. Terrie’s legacy and her books live www.terrieandersonbooks.com.au
